Axes

Gransfors make, in our opinion, the best axes in the world.

The quality is immediately apparent when you pick up an axe and even more so when you use it. This is hardly surprising, since they have been making axes since 1902.

The axes come with a 20-year guarantee and each axe bears the initials of the craftsman who made it. Whether you want an axe for professional forestry use or for your own personal use, look no further.

Wildlife Hatchet

Wildlife Hatchet

A small, light axe that can be easily carried, masked with its leather sheath, inside your pack or on your belt.

Where weight or size is an over-riding concern, this hatchet is ideal. Whether splitting sticks for a campfire or cutting branches, you’ll be amazed at how much you can do with this axe.

The hatchet has a 14" hickory handle and the head weighs 1lb. It comes with a grain-leather sheath.

Hunter's Axe

Hunter's Axe

This is a really good axe. The balance and 'feel' of the axe makes it a delight to use. This axe is the first and only axe in Sweden to receive a design award from The Swedish Society of Crafts and Design.

As the name suggests, it is specially made for hunters. The poll (back) is forged thinner than normal and gently rounded and burnished to a flay poll to be used when skinning an animal. Besides that, the axe is extremely good for chopping, in wood as well as meat and bones. The grip of the handle has circular grooves which gives a steady grip even if your hands are wet or sticky.

The axe has a 19" hickory handle and the head weighs 1.5lb. It comes with a grain-leather sheath.

Small Forest Axe

Small Forest Axe

Same size as the Hunters Axe but a more traditional pattern and poll.

The blade is thin. The handle is long enough to allow powerful chopping but will still fit into a rucksack, the back of a car or a boat.

Practical for splitting small sticks for the fire or cutting small-diameter wood for starter fuel in a fireplace.

The axe has a 19" hickory handle and the head weighs 1.5lb. It comes with a grain-leather sheath.

Scandinavian Forest Axe

Scandinavian Forest Axe

For those wanting a professional axe, this is the one. It is forged to a thin, curved bit and sharpened to make it suitable for cutting branches in fresh, resinous wood, spruce or pine.

The long handle allows tremendous power to be channelled into each swing. The axe has a 25" hickory handle and the head weighs 2lb. It comes with a grain-leather sheath.

Small Splitting Axe

Small Splitting Axe

Can be managed with one hand. Forged and ground to a concave, quite thin blade at the bit.

This design helps the axe to bite deep into the wood - and then split efficiently when the thicker part hits and pushes apart the wood. The poll of this axe, like the poll on most axes, is not designed for pounding on a wedge.

The head weighs 2lb. The 20" hickory handle has circular grooves at the grip and steel collar near the head. It comes with a grain-leather sheath.

Splitting Wedge

These are tremendous at splitting wood. The wedge is forged from steel and is twisted to maximise its splitting potential (this is much more effective than a straight wedge).

The poll has ground edges. For larger pieces of wood, at least two wedges should be used. The wedge weighs 4lb.

Double-Bit Throwing Axe

Double-Bit Throwing Axe

Not just for those who fancy themselves as Erik the Viking, it is a popular axe because of its versatility.

One blade is sharpened to a finely honed, narrow felling edge, while the second blade is ground slightly blunter, and used for knots and cutting near the ground, where a finely sharpened blade is more likely to be damaged.

The shorter handles version is for the sport of axe throwing, the longer handled version as a working axe. The Throwing Axe has a 29" straight hickory handle and the Working Axe has a 35" straight hickory handle with swell-knob. The head weighs 3lb. They come with two grain-leather sheaths.
